GETTING STARTED Flywheels with two different diameters are used on Chevrolet small-block V8, big-block V8, and V6/90-degree engines. Large flywheels are 14" in diameter, and have 168 teeth on the starter ring gear. Small diameter flywheels are 12-3/4" in diameter, and have starter ring gears with 153 teeth. The difference in flywheel diameters requires two distinct starter housings. Starter noses used with large diameter flywheels have two offset bolt holes; starters for small flywheels have two bolt holes which are paralleled to the back of the block. Most Chevrolet blocks are drilled for both types of starters. If you are changing the diameter of your Chevrolet's flywheel, you can convert your present starter to fit the new flywheel by installing the appropriate starter nose listed in group 2.085, Starter Housing, found within each engine classification.

This lightweight starter was introduced on 1988-91 Corvettes. Its internal gear reduction multiplies torque for fast starts. It weighs just 10.14 pounds-nine pounds less than a conventional starter. This compact starter also offers additional clearance for competition oil pans and chassis components.
Technical Notes: Use with 12 3/4" OD flywheel.


12361146	High-Torque Mini-Starter
This high performance gear reduction is designed for 1958-96 Chevrolet V8 and all V6 90º engines (200, 229, and 4.3L). Its compact starter delivers plenty of torque and it is a small package which offers increased clearance for extended oil pans and headers exhaust systems. This lightweight (10.5 pound) and powerful (1.2 kilowatt ouput) starter relies on a 3.75:1 gear reduction to spin a high-compression engine. This mini starter has a red Chevrolet Bow Tie logo and a dual bolt pattern for 12 3/4" (153 tooth) and 14" (168 tooth) flywheel. Mounting bolts and shims, gaskets and electrical connectors are included.
Technical Notes: This unit can be rotated to clear most exhaust systems. This starter is not recommended for competition.

Don't overlook the importance of a starter brace. Many starter problems in off-road applications can be traced to inadequate support for the starter motor. This brace significantly reduces the load on the starter nose.
